Breaking Barriers at Sea: Shaina Moriones Charts a Bold Course for Women in Maritime

In a defining moment at the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA) in the Philippines, Princess Cruises Third Officer Shaina Moriones stood proudly before her graduating class. As valedictorian and the only female cum laude among her peers, her story is one of courage, determination and trailblazing achievement.
Hailing from Cebu City and the eldest of nine siblings, Shaina’s journey began with a bold choice – pursuing STEM maritime courses in high school. While unconventional for a young woman, she embraced the challenge, driven by a deepening passion for the sea.
Her time at MMMA shaped her into a dynamic, technologically advanced, and resilient leader. But it was her onboard training with Princess Cruises from 2023 to 2024 that intensified her determination. Navigating real-world challenges, from rapidly changing weather conditions to complex team collaborations, Shaina proved she was ready for life at sea.
“Life onboard was challenging, but it strengthened my passion for seafaring. I realized that no matter the obstacles, this is where I belong,” she reflected.

Shaina’s success is more than a personal milestone – it’s a beacon for women in an industry that has historically appealed more to men. Her story signals a shift in the maritime world, where more women are stepping into leadership roles and redefining what’s possible.
“I hope to inspire more young Filipinos, especially women, to explore careers in the maritime industry and embrace both its challenges and rewards,” she said.
As the maritime industry evolves, Shaina stands as a powerful example of what’s possible through perseverance and passion. Her journey is just beginning – and it’s already making waves.
