Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is our No. 1 sustainability priority. In fact, we are pursuing net zero GHG emissions from our ship operations by 2050 and are already producing less total GHG emissions today than our peak historical year (2011), despite increasing our guest capacity since that time. Equipped with a comprehensive strategy to reduce our impact now while building new capabilities and solutions for the future, we’re committed to tackling decarbonization as the world works together to safeguard the planet for future generations to come.

Driving Operational Improvements
With limited availability of commercially viable low- and zero-emission fuels, reducing fuel use is one of the fastest ways to lower our emissions. Our itineraries are designed with efficiency in mind, considering how we can reduce our travel time and distance to use less fuel as guests discover even more beauty in the places we visit. Once itineraries are set, we use sophisticated algorithms to optimize the execution of the voyages, evaluating variables like weather patterns and sea current to minimize fuel consumption. We’re also innovating hull maintenance fleetwide through underwater drones and robots that inspect coatings and determine cleaning needs, improving maintenance and reducing drag to save fuel and cut emissions.
Optimizing Energy Efficiency
By reducing the amount of energy our ships require, we directly reduce fuel consumption. We are investing in new, highly efficient ships while also equipping our existing fleet with the latest technology – such as high-efficiency advanced air conditioning systems, LED lighting, waste heat recovery, Air Lubrication Systems and more. This strategy delivers near term efficiency gains while also preparing our fleet to integrate future low carbon technologies as they become available.


Investing in Low-GHG Power Generation
The path toward new technologies and alternative fuels requires curiosity, collaboration and innovative thinking. We closely track industry developments and engage with third-party experts, technology providers and research organizations to identify and trial promising pathways. Pilot programs like long-term biofuel testing help us understand real-world performance, infrastructure requirements, and operational impacts, ensuring we are well positioned as viable low and zero-GHG energy sources emerge. At the same time, we continue to advance successful shore power programs and introduce more LNG-powered ships to our fleet to deliver near-term emissions reductions.
