Alaskan Educators Step Aboard Westerdam

On a crisp summer day in Anchorage, a group of local educators traded classrooms for cruise decks – and walked away with a new perspective on careers in Alaska tourism.
Hosted aboard Holland America Line’s Westerdam, the Anchorage School District’s Career Pathways group of teachers experienced a full-circle tour of the industry. Their journey began at the motorcoach shop and railyard, where they met with team members who shared their personal career stories and the many paths that led them to Carnival Corporation’s Alaska operations. From there, the group boarded the ship for a guided tour and a memorable dinner at Canaletto, Westerdam’s flavorful specialty restaurant offering authentic Italian cuisine.
This visit wasn’t just a field trip. It opened doors to the possibility of future collaboration between educators and tourism professionals, with plans to connect subject matter experts to classrooms shaping hospitality-focused curriculum for future generations of travel and tourism professionals.
