AIDAprima successfully completes full test run for LNG operation in Hamburg
Afterapproval of Environmental Protection Agency practical test is fully satisfying
Great joy in the port of Hamburg: AIDAprima completedthe complete test run for LNG operation successfully and smoothly. The newcruise, ship which will be inaugurated tonight in a festive event, can such be operatedwith low-emission and environmentally friendly LNG (LNG = liquefied natural gas)in port.
Compared to the use of conventional marine diesel with0.1 percent sulfur content emissions and particle discharge will besignificantly reduced by using LNG. The emission of sulfur oxide and sootparticles will be completely prevented. Nitrogen oxide emissions will bereduced by up to 80 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent.
AIDAprima is the world's first cruise ship which canbe operated in an environmentally friendly way in port with liquefied naturalgas (LNG).
This leads to a major reduction in emissions whendocked.
The preparations and initial permit procedures for theport of Rotterdam are already well underway. For Southampton, Le Havre, andZeebrugge authorities have already given their approval.
"Webelieve in LNG as being the cleanest fossil fuel!" says Felix Eichhorn, PresidentAIDA Cruises. "With AIDAprima, we are the first cruise line in the worldto supply a ship with low-emission LNG for operation in port, and we are onceagain proving that we are pioneers of innovation. I am convinced that our pathis also a clear signal to the ports and LNG producers to invest in thenecessary infrastructure," continues Eichhorn.
With thenext generation of ships that will be put into service in 2019/2020, AIDA willgo one step further. Under the concept of "Green Cruising" they willbe operated with 100 percent low-emission LNG.
