"For Costa, sustainability is a strategic asset that is fully integrated into all corporateprocesses and pursued with an approach directed at achieving responsibleinnovation - comments Neil Palomba,President of Costa Cruises. - In thisrespect, the UN Sustainable Development Goals provide an extraordinaryopportunity and a framework within which we can work together to identifyuntested solutions, promote new forms of economy and build new scenarios. Weare the first company in the cruise industry to have taken up this challenge, which we are facing with a great sense of responsibility and major investments. This is demonstrated by the two new ships on order, the first cruise ships forthe international market to be powered by LNG, the cleanest fossil fuelcurrently available". "The Sustainability Report presents significantresults, achieved thanks to an integrated and multi-stakeholder approach thatdirectly involves all stakeholders, including the guests on board, who we wantto involve more and more - explains StefaniaLallai, Director of Sustainability at Costa Cruises. - We are strongly committed to launching and consolidating the innovative4GOODFOOD project, with which we have set ourselves the ambitious goal ofreducing food waste on board our ships by 50 percent by 2020, 10 years ahead ofthe UN 2030 Agenda. Our active participation in the Festival of SustainableDevelopment, promoted by the National Alliance for Sustainable Development, isa sign of the direction undertaken." The three sections of Costa Crociere's SustainabilityReport - SEA, YOU and TOMORROW - deal respectively with environmentalprotection, shared value creation, and responsible innovation, the cornerstonesof Costa Cruises' sustainability initiatives. SEA - Reducing emissions, optimising consumption, managing waste with a view to recovery, reuse and recycling, combating climatechange and safeguarding marine ecosystems are objectives that are widelyintegrated into operational activities. The active involvement andcollaboration of all stakeholders, from the ship's guests to its logisticalpartners and local authorities in the areas reached and visited, becomefundamental in the process of minimizing impacts. YOU - Central to Costa's strategy for sustainabledevelopment is the promotion of a business and tourism model that ensureseconomic development and growth opportunities in places reached by its ships, enhancing their identity, culture and natural heritage. Thus, Costa'scommitment is focused on promoting an idea of sustainable tourism based on participatorydialogue with territories and local communities and on raising cruisepassengers' awareness of an increasingly authentic tourist experience. A concrete example is the partnership signed in 2017by Costa Cruises with the Associazionede I Borghi più belli d'Italia (Association of The Most Beautiful Villages inItaly). This collaboration is based on the principle of sustainability andon promoting Italy's unrevealed cultural and territorial heritage. TOMORROW - In terms of responsible innovation, Costaonce again confirms its role as a pioneer in the cruise sector with the two new ships fuelled by LNG (liquefiednatural gas: the cleanest fossil fuel currently available), which will enterinto service in 2019 and 2021. An ambitious and important milestone in promoting aresponsible and sustainable approach is the 4GOODFOOD programme, which aims to reduce food waste on board by 50 percent by 2020. Costa has in factlaunched a unique programme in the maritime sector focused on the value of food and responsible consumption in the complex context of the cruise ship, which puts the citizen and guest at the centre. An integrated, all-encompassingproject, which ranges from reviewing the gastronomic offer on board to managingsurplus food, by raising awarenessamong guests and crew and ensuring their directinvolvement in the great global challenge of reversing the trend. Currently, the experience has been activated in conjunction with the ports of call ofCosta Diadema, in the port of Savona and the port of Civitavecchia, and, fromMay 2018, also in the port of Marseilles with Costa Fascinosa, and the port ofBari with Costa Deliziosa. In the first 10 months, from 15 July 2017 to 15 May2018, approximately 28,700 portions were allocated to local charities thanks tothe local Food Bank network. The aim is to extend the project to other ports inItaly and the Mediterranean.
